CRAWL SPACE INSULATION
Prevent mold & moisture damage with the right crawl space solution
A lot of your home’s energy problems could result in inadequate insulation in crawl spaces.
Signs of crawlspace insulation problems
- Cold floors?
- Fiberglass insulation installed between joists?
- Have a damp crawl?
- Old fiberglass insulation falling down?
- Drafty rooms?
- High utility bills?
Types of Crawl space insulation
Spray Foam: Seal rim joists by using a 2part-expanding spray foam insulation. This waterproof material is used to seal gaps and cracks located around your rim joists. It protects against air leakage so that the air you pay to heat/cool your home, stays in the home! It also provides a great solution for homes that have Cold Floors in the winter.
Vapor Barrier: A type of crawlspace encapsulation material that is installed on the crawl floor and secured to the walls using spray foam. This will turn any crawl into a nice, clean space! It prevents moisture from entering the crawl, protects against air leakage, and is a great solution for unwanted pests.
Rigid Foam: This type of insulation is a specialized thick piece of foam board with reflective material on one side made from tiny graphite particles that are known to reflect heat back into your crawlspace or basement. These are typically installed on the walls or under rim joists and are much more reliable than fiberglass alternatives.
Benefits of rigid foam and spray foam crawlspace insulation
Stable and reliable. When installed correctly, rigid and spray foam insulation will never need to be done again. It does not compress or lose its R-value over time.
Effective air sealing. The rigid foam stops air leaks when joints between foam panels are taped and sealed with spray foam.
Moisture-proof. It is perfect for the moist environment of the crawl space because it doesn’t absorb moisture.
Unfriendly to mold. The rigid foam does not contain an organic food source nor does it hold moisture. These qualities make it impossible for mold to hold on.
Better ductwork performance. The ducts in the crawl space experience benefit from the rigid foam installed against crawl space walls.
Rigid foam panels outperform fiberglass in the crawl space
While fiberglass may be cheaper, it will cost you more in the end. When installed correctly, rigid and spray foam insulation will perform the same after 15 years as it did on the 1st day. Whereas fiberglass will deteriorate over time.
